The Human Body

Applying certain colours of reds, blue, yellows and hints of green marble onto the scraps of fabric I wanted to experiment to create the appropriate pattern for red blood cells. After my selection I have chosen this as this was exactly what i wanted it to be, additional this was my strongest piece. Any ideas that I can use this print?
Experimenting with different coloured glue sticks for the glue gun, I found I could explore different shapes and thickness of the glue to create themes for inside the body and out.
Long sheet of Latex, pulled to give my hand shapes and textures making unruliest approach of the skin to recognise the main object. This was not my main intestines as I already used the sheet for creating soft female sculpture.

For this sculpture I used layers of pva glue with adding different colour threads to represent the main organs of heart, lungs and small intestines. The pva glue makes it unusual and clear as I did my experiment on the female mannequin. The threads brings an unpleasant texture, as it was all over covered in glue. Any suggestions for improvement?

My second sculpture is made from just different types of Chocolate, melted to be poured all over the female mannequin. Behind the chocolate, I had to use newspaper to give it extra support. However as the piece was ready to peal of the mannequin, I found it began to flick, which made it difficult to suggest whether it might just fall apart. As this is a great experiment it is not suitable to my creative practice. Any suggestions?

I wanted to experiment with my dishes i bought and found this artist Klari Reis who who used these dishes in her own studies to paint and share a petri dish every day for all of 2013 in The Daily Dish
You can vist her blog on http://thedailydish2013.blogspot.co.uk. As i got inspiration from her work, I used pva glue, marble, brusho and mix media to capturing what goes on inside the human body to collect my information ready for development in other areas I am specialising in. These scanned images are what I did, after a few hours of drying. By the way, all these dishes had to be scanned on the bottom.

This image on the left, is my favourite because the colours give the sense of movement which has given me a great result, however the inside of the body, Mr John Cagney who is an senior lecturer in Physiology Applied to Health, has been examining the human body has shown evidence of expert commentary, illuminating these stunning images. Which I want to try and experiment to create a similar approach. Additional, I really like the shapes, swirls and colours, also how by adding small candle wax flat round shapes it gives the impression of cells, bacteria.
Both scanned images above and below my text gives a great result of what is going on inside the human body. The colour and shapes makes the dishes interesting to see what I can do with these
designs to progress onto further development.

Just returned back to college from after the weekend break, all the dishes have different approaches from when I last scanned them. They have all different textures, its become more vibrant and developed more details. These will be a mix of scanned and photography images.

Out of all the Dishes of the first stage, is there any sugesstions of development?

The second stage is once they are all dry, I had to photograph and scanned to show different approaches and which ones are appropriate.

More to be continued.
_
In my project I am experimenting with clay to create pieces for 2d and 3d showing my reflections of the human bodies parts of male and female and inside the human body such as blood, cells and organs.
I will be recording my progress through photography, video and scanned images.
As i was building my peice from using the males figure of the mannequin, I found as it was drying over the three days it began to form a crack through the piece, however as it did crack in half I liked the two pieces could overlap each other which made it look different and interesting to display once it has been fired.

Displaying my male figure different ways to capture what's suitable for placing the fragile pieces, as you can see, it has cracked into halves. As i have stated before, I wanted to try the over lapping approach which I really like now than what I have done. The reason why I like how it is, because it shows a accurate reflection of the what the ceramic piece is.  What do you think?

Julie Dodd is an Installation artist who i have been using throughout my research, working on the comparisons of 2D and 3D pieces. If you view her online portfolio, on this link  http://juliekdodd.moonfruit.com/#/3d-printwork/4549759073. Also with this, i compared with her to Senior Lecturer, John Cagney who has examined inside the human body.

I have been using Molly Williams who is an Textile Artist, for inspiration to use Felt fabrics and mix media to capture the human figure to create a range of pieces for my Installation theme. You can visit her blog on www.mollywilliams.co.uk/portfolio1.html. The figures she has made are what I am trying to communicate to the audience that by creating a full sized figure with the correct fabric and why the colours I have selected give the purpose of different colour skins, muscles and veins all in one layer. Having the correct amount of felt and timing myself to complete a full human figure. To make my practice different to what Molly has, I wanted to show an unusual and unpleasant effect and texture with the felt to show the ins and out repeating the skin can be combined to blood, veins and bacteria from what I have been researching throughout my experiments.

Once I got the shape of the females front figure, I had to hand sowing it all together to give it more support and create shapes and gaps to create a series of different sections of organs and I got more ideas from researching, drawing my designs in my sketchbook and displaying each layer to form a series from start being the inside to last part being the skin. To create this effect, as you can see, I used different amounts of liquid Latex and pva mixed together and separately to find the correct liquid amount needed. I found by touching the different parts, the bottom of the piece has mainly just Latex which has cleared to give that effected I was hoping to have. The investigation has gone how I wanted it to be and I will be using Felt and Latex as my main resource for developing pieces.
These two images have both been scanned with light and without light which brings two completely different effects and textures of carrying out the research. The top image makes it seem there are just loads of veins rushing through the body, oxygen and blood is being bumped. The bottom images makes it seen also there is a lot of energy going on to give a similar response to what my project is about.

This american textile artist called Heidi Litchterman, who I got very interested in researching her background and portfolio of wall hanging pieces and wearable art which made me to explore and experiment with unwanted fabric and mixed combined to show a relationship of inspiration of human
organs and the human figure. You can view her portfolio on http://www.heidilichterman.co.uk/textile-art. I began to collect decorative objects around my house to get a feel of what I can put together with them and also with my collections of natural forms such as strew nails, twigs, leaves and many more objects. The more I positioned the objects together and referring to Heidi's work I found that I got a design that really suited to my vision of an Heart. By using the pva glue technique placing the twigs, nails and different shapes and textures red objects, it gives the impression of the human hart. Once it was dry I pealed it off from the acetate paper, I deiced to take the final peice on the wall to see whether I wanted it a hanging piece or placed onto the wall. I will be continuing to use objects to form organs and the figure to approach different ways and make it interesting. What do you think?

With relations to Heidi and researched Textile mixed media though the internet and books i have. I have started to experiment with all visions of inside the body, how I can investigate to use colour into sense of movement. My favourite is the first and second experiment, I decided to place unwanted scraps of materials and fabrics to hold together to place Marble and Brusho techqnuies to find different ways of colour and what the message across to others when I give my description of my views and visions of inside of the body. Which one is your favourite and weak piece, explain your reasons why and I can develop from my feedback.

This peice has become a favourite because of design and colours which when taking close ups photographs of it makes me more festinated for design. Marble and Brusho work together when adding pva glue and varnish. Varnish was used in my stage two mock final major project (m.f.m.p) when I was experimenting with printmaking. The varnish makes the design shinny and changed certains colours making the section as if it was digitally printed onto the fabric. However, with this piece I have learned that the colours rich and glossy.

I really like how the marble and brush has soaked through the material onto the table leaving this which has brought more inspiration to carry out video of the liquids move, To investigate this, I will be using different ways.

These are Textiles mixed media hanging piece, influenced by Heidi that brought my attention to start combining and develop drawings to convert into prints of different sections of the body. The image below the two is an edit used from my mobile phone 'Overexposed' I really like how the contrast has made it clear and how its turned to black and white image.

Continuing to use pva glue, I am trying to find the appropriate colours and media to explore to be inspired by to continue with when starting to develop creating organs and the figure. Scanned and Photographed close ups. Any suggestions?

When i was removing my two pieces of the unit, it lefted it's remaining which reminded me of an Bolye Family who used liquids such as inks, water and many more, collected different sample parts of each member of the family to find information by photography, sculpture, pantings and video. From researching their work on websites and youtube links it has brought my attention to follow a similar direction to find movement in another different approach that relates to my theme. View thier work on these links, http://www.boylefamily.co.uk/boyle/works/index.html

Watch these clips.

From viewing their work, I had enough information to start the research and experimentation with all kinds of media and techniques. With this I taken photographs and videos. I began by experiment by  videoing different colours waterproof inks dripped into water to try capture the soft, slow motions of how it swirls around the space inside the large jar. I will be continuing similar ways in different medias to try get different approaches as what the Boyle Family have done. Also within their portfolio, they have used closes up of small insets by using microscope video. With the video, they upload onto a large scale.

My goal is to create a piece that relates insides in the body that can be part of my installation instalment. If you view this link, to watch each experiment and give me your feedback on my blog. Unfortunately there has been difficulty uploading on my blog. http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC1i9JYSMN2HNJlea1su_EFg/videos?view=0&flow=grid .

I really like Experiment five because of how soft and delight it is to watch. However, experiment two and four show perfect examples of what i am trying to achieve. Please, give your feedback and how to improve for further development. When giving feedback - write down what I have named them as.
I began to use the Microscope to take photographs and vidoes to get different approach of Close up imagery to get more inspiration and get myself to be more creative for developing mix media and designs for clothing and interior. This image above I used myself and a class mates saliva placed in Dishes.
Another experiment was using an diabetic student's blood, again placed the blood in the Dish. I really enjoyed using the microscope, when I began a repetitive pattern of using it in my eyes to capture detail and bring that high speed quality of what it is happening in a short time, while I am taking photographs. The colour, line, tone and texture makes it special and very eye catching to keep looking at it. Which makes me research more exciting to use media. What do you think ?

In the corner of my eye, the finest detail comes from the tiny lines called Sclera. I want to force on the Sclera in more experiments.
  Close up of my tongue
Close up of inside my mouth
 Close up of my nose
 My Cheek Bone
Close up of my hair touching my eye.
 Close up inside my hand

Close up of my hair on the top on my head.
Another close up of my cheek.

Close up of inside my hand while moving all my fingers to create movement shown through the photograph.
 Close up of eyelashes.
Close up of eyelashes and eyebrows.
With all my research and experimentation work in my sketchbooks, i thought it be great to see what it be like close up?

Following with peers feedback, I am going to use the Displacement filters on photoshop. I have down two designs to show elements of cells, blood and continuing to use the imagery of the close ups i have done above. Continue to use Curtains, Bedding, Clothes, Bags, ect. What is your favourite? Any improvements? I really like what i have done with these curtains it completes with the theme for inside the body and i will be continuing to develop a series of photopshop close ups onto objects and also respond to Chloe's feedback.
On photoshop, I decided to use the microscopic imagery to extended to combined each other from the imageries to create more relations with the underneath the skin.
textile mixed media with red laytex layer
textile mixed media with red laytex layer
marble paper piece with red laytex layer
tissue applied with varnish to harden to raise texture and form with combined red laytex layer

I really like these four peices it captures what is underneath the skin and makes the final touches of the exhibition space complete. To respond with Lorna Black feedback, by using the imagery in my exhibition. Lorna's feedback included to use the dishes to add inside my microscopic imagery. With some experiments, I found the size was not suitable, as the image was really small. However, I really liked the idea and did respond to her feedback.
The human body final develop stages
I have been taking photographic record of the journey for development to show my strengths and weakness process.

say hello to sam :)
by using the skeleton, it helped me to find shapes and measurements for each and part of the human body. I was going to use this skeleton to create different parts of the bones. But i found it too much when creating a range of organs in a short period of time. However, i still remind to use the skeleton for  support.

Putting wire into some of the soft textile pieces to give extra support and also made it easier for when placing the shape in place by bending it time and time again for when i felt it was suitable for it to be stable.
Liquid laytex pured for me to apply different coloured reds and oranges of brusho with adding some water sprayed with red ink for it to create horrible looking, yet still effective by the colours dried with some amazing bright and bold tones with the textures and it had a sudden smell towards it.

unwanted fabric, wool, red laytex and mixed media paper to form my organ of the human heart.
Creating large amounts of different liquids put together of red fabric inks, paints, marbles, brushes and pva glue for me to hand paint each and every pieces to form beautiful colours which makes connections with the inside of the human body.
layers and layers of reds, oranges, browns, dark yellows and hints of blues and peach colours of felt to form the skin. After creating 5 large pieces of felt with all different blends of colours it makes the male figure effective and beautiful places together with hand stitched one by one.

By attaching another pieces of felt with some darker tones for the skins pieces as i found it become shorter than i thought it be, so with this i have made it at the correct length how i want it to be without creating whole male piece like artist Molly Williams has, by using all the felt to form full sized mannequin.

Pieces of small to large intestines, completed waiting it for to dry to hand stitched and glue together for it to form how i want it to be placed when being hung in my exhibition.

couple of last few touches with attaching more fishing wire on certain areas, be completed.

Final Instalment
The final instalment has been a huge achievement for me when taking new, interesting topic for final major project. Textiles, fine art three dimensional work. With clear instructions for special installations for hanging to be attached for each piece.

The quality of the pieces made from are all unwanted, recycled fabrics, dyed with beautiful colours of reds, pinks, hints of blue and cream to show perfect relations for showing my inspiration for inside the human body for the important organs for humans to live.  I used the best quality Felts to form layers and layers of sections to hand stitched together to show relations for the male physical figure.

Additional, I have imported my close up imagery from the microscopes A4 rectangle sized imagery, to give my exhibition the final touch that needed too be completed.

  1. Introduction exploring the body, i am going to develop a range of creative pieces by using a microscope technology, that i can examine the body in any great detail and on a microscope scale. By exploring the microscopic world inside the body, have been able to understand how much larger tissues, organs and whole systems perform on their own and alongside other tissues, organs and systems to maintain a healthy environment. This new insight has also lead us to see how truly fascinating the human bodies tissues, organs and systems are, from 206 bones in the skeleton, which support the body and give it it's shape, to complex systems that keeps the humans alive.

  3. Hi Francesca, I’m leaving my message here because you asked for my critique on your work and blog in general. My initial thought is that it would have been helpful to have an introduction from you on the course you are studying and a bit about your chosen topic. Why is the topic of interest to you? What do you hope to achieve with your experiments and why did you choose the techniques you are using to represent your topic of the human body?

Your samples are very interesting and I am sure the photos do not do your work justice. It’s very hard to share work online in this way … always better to see the real thing … so well done for attempting to present your work for us to see

The marbling samples are good. I particularly like the marbled dishes that you created inspired by the work of Klari Reis. I also visited The Daily Dish site. You asked how this process may possibly be taken further. It’s hard to make a suggestion for this as I’m not sure how you produced your samples. You mention the materials you used but not your process. Perhaps, you can reproduce some samples and take prints from them whilst they are wet? Perhaps on paper and also on a variety of fabrics - silk and cotton in particular? Take several prints and add machine and/or hand stitching

The scans are really good. The pinky red sample is great and does remind me of red blood cells. It’s probably my favourite but I find the others inspiring too. Have you heard of a site called “Dumpr” - http://www.dumpr.net - “then click on amazing circles”. It’s a fun way of taking your scans further. Upload a photo of your dish to the site and manipulate it … you will have to go to the site to see what I mean. As soon as I saw the work of Klari Reis it reminded me of “amazing circles”. It’s a free site by the way

Your pva/latex “inside/outside” figure samples are interesting. I visited the sites of Molly Williams and Heidi Lichterman to see your inspiration. Of your fabric samples the first one is my favourite as I like the very rich dark tones of red with white marbling. This to me represents blood and blood cells the best as the marbling could represent white blood cells. Probably my least favourite (weak one) are the samples with bright yellow on as I am finding these the hardest to apply to the human body … but they are very good samples in themselves (interesting textures)

Your samples with marbling, brusho and varnish are very exciting - I love them. Did you just photograph them or did you take prints as well? On fabric and paper?

Your paint and pva samples are great as well. Love those blobs of pva that look like cells. They reminded me of batik wax pellets. Have you tried incorporating wax with paint?

To conclude, may I suggest on your blog that you break up your projects and samples into sections so that it’s easier to read and to follow. It is just a suggestion of course and as it’s your blog it’s up to you … but there’s a lot of information to read in one long passage

Good luck with your studies Francesca

  4. I really like the idea of using very close up images as you can pick up so much detail, and as theres alot of detail, theres so much potential to create pieces based on the huge range of patterns and colours.

You could maybe work on a very large scale when recreating some close up images, as this would be a good way of clearly showing all the fine detail.

Your final piece could possibly be something like curtains? as these are a very large surface to work on...

Or if you're creating a garment, the patterns could be based on the microscope images, and possible have areas of 3D coming out of the garment

  5. I like the use of the dishes to present your samples in as they link to the scientific theme of you project.I like the use of the P.V.A and the wax with the threads in as the thread create a random interesting pattern when built up.

I think that you could recreate some of the close up images in the dishes as these are really interesting

If your planning too make a garment as your final piece i think that it would be interesting to experiment with making the garment look like it is made out of the dishes by perhaps making some circular pieces as the dishes with the experiments on them then stitch them all together.

  6. Facebook message from Nataline Jones
Hey, I've just looked at your blog.

I really like it, it's really interesting, and gritty, I think it's wonderful! I love the designs you made in the petri dishes, they are stunning, all of the patterns are beautiful and like pieces of art! I don't see how they could be improved, I can definitely see how they can be related to parts of the human body, with the swirls and the movements and the dot...s that resemble cells.
I also really like the photo of the male clay piece which is cracked in half, I think it looks really interesting the way you layered it together, again it looks like a piece of art - a sculpture.
I love the piece on the female mannequin, the colours are beautiful together and look very appealing, and definitely resemble human veins. Well done!
The hanging heart is very effective, and I love how in the photo there is a stand going over the top of the sculpture which looks like a love heart shape also.
I think that my favourite pieces are the ones you made from unwanted scraps of materials and fabrics in Marble and Brusho techniques. I think that they are beautifully coloured, and very interesting, as well as being unsettling, which isn't a bad thing. I say this because it is uncomfortable to look at images that represent the inside of the body, but I think that you've captured them very artistically and I am very impressed! I especially love the purple and blue colours that you've created. I can't see a way of improving them, I think you've done a fantastic job. Maybe with a bit more practice you would be able to define your work more, but I think that you are well on your way to creating amazing pieces of art, which I would buy for my wall!!
Your video experiments are wonderful, I especially like the colours used in experiment 7 as well as the textures that appeared in experiment 3.
The last section of your blog is very unsettling, but very very bold and I like it a lot. I love the comparisons of the close-up images of the different parts of the body and the close-ups of the material. They are stunning, the textures and the colours are amazing and beautiful.

Overall I think you've done such an excellent job and that you should be very proud of yourself. It is definitely the kind of art that I am interested in, very abstract and artistic.
I am very impressed, and don't think that there is much room for improvement! WELL DONE !!!!

    Dear Francesca
I think that your felted torso experiment reflects your statement: the colours I have selected give the purpose of different colour skins, muscles and veins all in one layer.
The overall effect is aesthetically very attractive however you say in your blog that - I wanted to show an unusual and unpleasant effect and texture with the felt to show the ins and out repeating the skin can be combined to blood, veins and bacteria from what I have been researching throughout my experiments.
I think you need to make your felt more textured and striking - consider adding different materials to the layers of wool fibres - the orange and red plastic nets that are used to hold oranges and onions, plastic tubing or straws (blood vessels) and bubble wrap - you can add colour to bubble wrap by stuffing the the little pockets with fabric or wool. Once the fibres are felted you could add stitches to make scars and pustules, warts etc. Use colours that clash and /or contrast.
Instead of modelling on a perfect mannequin you could use a real body to shape your figure - I used my own body which is far from perfect!!
    Keep going and enjoy experimenting
    Hope this helps!
    Best wishes
    Molly

    Dear Francesca
I have enjoyed looking at and reading and I think that your strongest experiments are at the end where you are working with 'unwanted scraps of materials and fabrics to hold together to place Marble and Brusho techniques to find different ways of colour'. These would translate into interesting body parts!
I am attaching an interview I made with the textile artist website and it will I hope answer your dissertation questions - also some recent photos. I also have a blog where I put current work and exhibitions so do have a look there: textilematters.com
All the best in your final project!
If there is anything else you need to know please get back to me
    Best wishes
    Molly

Well done! You have some really exciting work here and generally your blog is very well presented. Remember to check your spelling, it takes no time to run your work through a spell check and there are quite a few mistakes. Not really important in the scheme of your art, but it shows an attention to detail, and it is important to convey a professional approach.

You have some great photos ditch the ones that are out of focus or take them again, see above regarding professional approach! I want to know more about your dishes, remember I know nothing about you or your work and if this blog is intended for people like me, explain everything. What are they, are you growing something in your studio?

Not sure about the hand prints, they don't fit really with the rest of your work. Are you doing internal organs which is where your focus seems to be and is your best work. The hands will divert you from your primary investigation.

Have you looked at Wellcome Trust image website http://wellcomeimages.org/ they have all sorts of stuff on bodies and diseases and you can download for free. You may have looked at the project I did on diseases lots of images from there http://www.pocketmouse.co.uk/diamond.php .

Sorry would love to write more ... hope this helps and I haven't sounded negative, you are doing good stuff and the things I have commented on are easy to sort out. Good luck!

Would be grateful if you could "Like" my pocketmouse fb page - we all need a bit of help and publicity.

    Best wishes,

    Anne

  10. The pieces you have created so far for your final display look really interesting. I really like how you have used Petri dishes is your work, I imagine your final display will be like walking into a biology lab! Maybe you could put some photographs of your primary or some of your work into the dishes and hang them in your display.

  11. You have explored your project theme very vividly and in depth by using a wide range of media and experimentation. Your final pieces reflect your intentions well and the display of your work is very interesting. I think including your primary imagery has worked nicely.
